The Dahlia Diaries
I think all garden enthusiasts squeal with delight as the dahlia season edges closer… and once the season starts, so does the total excitement and joy… well for me anyway!
Dahlias are my friends for the summer and it is a friendship which requires some submission on my part; constantly feeding and watering them… but it is all worth it, as in return, they joyfully offer themselves up as a constant supply to my favourite vases.
Let’s not forget the slightly less beautiful element of how it all starts… the hunting down and securing of the dahlia tubers! It really can be a tad stressful finding and then acquiring the varieties that you like. I had two disappointing years buying online; missing out on my preferred varieties and getting underwhelming tubers that clearly need a few more seasons to develop. I am at peace with it all… well, right now anyway!
I am enjoying the current season while still seeking those tubers that never quite sprung to life, but that thought can wait until winter, when it all begins again and the war of the tubers starts anew! May the fastest seeker win… hopefully that will be me this year… 3rd time lucky ..right?
