Winter Musings
You know what it’s like…it’s raining outside, you are doing a little tidying up and you find something that distracts you. Well, that’s what happened here!
After my father passed a few years ago my husband and I were tasked with clearing his home, and what an ordeal that was.
My father, bless him, kept all his university notes, books and reports (read - eye roll here!) Amongst these items were some of his books, one of which is titled Calculation in Heating and Ventilation, by C.S Coleman - no disrespect to the author, but oh how boring. However, the paper in this book is beautiful, the texture and weight, even the colour had aged to a beautiful patina. My son pointed out that Grandad wouldn’t be very happy with me cutting it up, and how C.S Coleman would be insulted. I assured him the book was 99 years old and he would be touched that it had another opportunity to shine - anyway, that’s how I sold it to myself and convinced myself that I was definitely doing the right thing!
I constructed a paper chain garland edged with German glass glitter, which over time also ages, and develops a gorgeous patina - in my mind, they’re a beautiful match. Equally, who doesn’t love little favours at the table, tied up with moss-coloured velvet ribbon.
The book still has many pages left, so as winter drags on I am likely to keep adding to the glittered paper chain. A cute little project, don’t you think?
