Let There Be Light!

I think I’m quite a practical person, amid my need for beautiful design and armloads of flowers. I am not keen on waste - by that I mean when something that I purchased or was gifted, and that I enjoyed using, has come to its natural conclusion for its current role. What if it could be given a second life?

I seem to ponder this question regularly. In this story, I take items that I already own and turn them into candles - taking them down to the candle store for refilling feels quite satisfying. Many of these items were of humble beginnings, such as the tiny screw top jars that held pate…now they will be perfect as travel candles, or perhaps en masse down the table, or snug on a platter. Surplus bowls make wonderful kitchen additions, with the candle scent perfect for getting rid of unwanted food smells. The small espresso cups make a lovely cluster with pretty flowers and the humble jam jar makes a very cute gift.

These are only just a few ideas, more will keep revealing themselves as the months pass…watch this space. I use Retreat in Newmarket, Auckland, to refill my repurposed vessels.
