How I Wrap My Gifts

For the next few months, I’ll be covering off all of the essential elements you need to think about in the lead up to Christmas, and what could be more essential than presents!

Present wrapping is an aspect of Christmas that I adore.

For me, there is nothing quite like seeing a little mountain of be-ribboned boxes and packages nestled at the foot of the Christmas tree, it certainly embodies the air of Christmas anticipation and magic.

Enclosing carefully selected gifts in beautifully crafted papers and ribbons is a way to expand on the act of giving - the delight begins before the item is even unwrapped by the recipient.

Step 1: Choose your Themes

I like to plan out my gift wrapping and will often work with a theme.  If I’m hosting an event, I’ll usually match the gifting experience to the colours, look or feel of the event - in this way the theme transcends through from table and tree to the unwrapping of the gifts and the personal experience of my guests.

This year, I’m working with two themes; Tartan and Natural/DIY - you can read more about them here

Step 2: Additional Elements

Building elements creates a luxurious look and feel. I will often work with around three elements per gift; paper, ribbon and then small embellishments. I love glass decorations or metal bells. You can also layer ribbons or include a small gift card - the key is to make sure that each element compliments the other.

I also like to consider ways that I can bring a natural element to my wrapping, collecting foliage or flowers on walks which I slip under a ribbon, or collecting pinecones to dust with glitter. I also like to consider the environment and use recyclable, reusable or compostable materials where possible. If something is of good quality, you will be able to use it for many years in new settings.

Step 3: Paper

When selecting paper, I’ll look for one with a good weight, as this way it won’t rip easily and it also wraps smoothly so you can avoid little wrinkles.  Use double sided tape to avoid unsightly sellotape lines, and fold the edges of the paper over before taping, so you have crisp and consistent lines.

If you’re using a patterned paper, then a simple style of ribbon will work or adorn a simpler paper choice with a ribbon with a little more decorative detail.

I often paint my own wrapping paper. In this way, I can weave in the colour elements to match either the event I’m hosting or the gift itself. Check out my DIY blog post here to learn more on how to create your own paper.

If you’re purchasing paper, there are many paper manufacturers you can access online, for example Rifle Paper Co.  whom I love! I also purchase many types of papers through Amazon.

Step 4: Enjoy the process

Let your creativity run a little wild and enjoy the process - the joy is in the giving!
